The Cowboy’s Christmas Retreat is a book that I was interested in reading, since I haven’t read a book that could be considered a “contemporary romance” in a long time. It was interesting to think about what my assumption of what it would be (sappy, not like real life) and the reality of what it was.
Riley and Lucy are best friends. They have been best friends since their school days, and although they shared one kiss, many years ago, they have kept their relationship platonic. Lucy was married, and divorced from Colin, a man who cheated on her (he was with another woman for the birth of their child!!!) and Riley is engaged to another woman. Although Lucy and Riley see each other often right now, Riley is planning to move to begin his own horse ranch. When Riley’s life also begins to fall apart, he decides to take Lucy and her young son George on his planned honeymoon at the Top Dog Dude Ranch. Lucy and George jump at the chance to be away at the holidays, and look forward to spending the time as best friends. As you may guess, nothing really goes the way either Lucy or Riley expect it to!
